Is the pressure on to get drunk?

boy drinking alcoholAre your mates putting pressure on you to drink booze, when you don’t want to? It’s your choice and you can say no.

Your real friends are likely to respect you more if you stand up for yourself, so you shouldn’t feel like you have to drink to ‘fit in’ with the crowd or boost your confidence, just be yourself.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Choose your mates carefully – hang out with people who like doing similar stuff so you don’t feel pushed into doing things you don’t want to. Being part of the ‘cool’ crowd may not be as much fun as it looks.

Stick up for yourself – having the guts to say ‘no’ may be hard, but it feels good to stand up for yourself and what you believe in.

Don’t judge others – everyone has the right to make their own choices. Respecting someone else’s choice will help them to respect yours. You don’t have to agree with their point of view, but they have a right to their own opinions.

Tell someone – if you get on well with your parents or a teacher then talk to them about the pressures you are facing and how it is making you feel.

Stand up for someone else – sometimes you’re able to tackle pressure from mates because you’re older or feel more confident. Sticking up for someone else can help that person deal with the pressures they’re facing and stop them feeling down.
